Neville Public Museum of Brown County

Neville Public Museum of Brown County - Museum of Science, Art, and History

  • Registration must be made at least two weeks in advance by calling 920-448-4460 ext. 0.
  • Have at least three alternate days and times in case the time you are planning is already reserved.

Limitations

While groups of 40 to 60 work best, we are willing to accommodate any size of group, provided that groups are willing to divide and work within their time constraints. For groups of more than 60 with less than an hour's worth of time a self-guided tour is recommended. In cases of groups of over 100 the museum is willing to provide scavenger hunts and scripts for chaperones and teachers.

Chaperone Requirement1 chaperone per 10 students minimum (1 chaperone per 6 students recommended)

Prepare your class for the trip

  • Introduce the students to the topic. This can be accomplished through an in-class assignment or project.
  • Introduce the students to the student expectations. For older students, give them responsibility to come up with best behavior practices.
  • Plan your arrival to the museum 15 minutes early. Trains, bridges and road construction are par for the course. By arriving early, students can take bathroom breaks and have more time to enjoy the tour.
  • Prepare name tags for students. This can help volunteer staff identify students from the visiting public. Individualized or thematic name tags can bring students one step closer to identifying the topic they will be studying. Large plain fonts make name tags easier to read.

Lunch at the Museum

  • Depending upon availability, bag lunch facilities can be set up free of charge for schools touring the museum. If your group needs a lunch room set up, please ask to have one reserved when you call to register your group tour. Advance notice is needed to facilitate set up.
  • Vending machines with snacks and sodas are available. Food and drink must be eaten in the lunch area or outside and is not permitted in the rest of the museum.
  • Please keep the lunch area neat and tidy. Also, please leave the lunch area promptly as other school groups may need to use it.

Tips for Chaperones

  • Be a leader. Be at the front of your group. Students are often unsure of which way to go. Lead and they will follow.
  • Have a watchful eye. Know where your students are at all times and encourage students to stay together.
  • Compliment work. Don't forget to praise students when they are well behaved.

The Curator of Education is willing to work with teachers to enhance in-classroom experiences, work with special needs and meet student academic standards. If you have any questions before the visit, contact the Curator of Education, Matt Welter.

Before leaving the Museum

There will be a 5 to 10 minute regroup period in the orientation area. This will give students an opportunity to express what they learned at the museum, while also giving the chaperones an opportunity to make sure they have all of their students. It also serves to make it easier to gather students up for leaving the museum or for preparing for lunch.

Back at School

Reinforce the student's educational experience at the Neville Public Museum.

  • Play Twenty Questions on the bus ride back or while students are waiting for other chaperone groups.
  • Develop an art project.
  • Have students create thank you cards or letters of what they got out of the experience.
  • Give a quiz on the experience.
  • Ask students what they remember about the museum.
