Who are the Hmong?

How did the Hmong get to Green Bay? What historical events led to their arrival? What cultural values do they have? How do they contribute to Wisconsin’s cultural fabric? See objects that are part of the Musuem’s collection that tell this story. Watch the film Being Hmong Means Being Free. Self-guided assignment sheet is available to groups unable to attend.

Dino-Mural
Grades: pre K-3
Length: 30 to 45 minutes
Related Exhibit: Discovery Room
See a life-size Dinosaur Mural by artist Amy Graff featuring a mother T-Rex guarding her eggs. Through questions and exploration of the five senses, students uncover the mystery of what Mama T-Rex eats. Replicas of dinosaur artifacts and one real dinosaur artifact passed around during the program. Presented in the Discovery Room.
Early Wisconsin History
Grades: 4-12, especially 4th
Length: 2 to 2.5 hours
Related Exhibit: On The Edge Of The Inland Sea
Explore On the Edge of the Inland Sea, while also studying Wisconsin history from the fur trade to the Peshtigo Fire. Hands-on activity challenges students to think about the tools and toys that suited different eras. Ice cutting film included in the tour. If you would like to include the glaciers and prehistoric peoples in this tour, allow for an extra 30 minutes.

Learn about the city of Green Bay through maps, transportation, and people as presented in On the Edge of the Inland Sea. Hands-on mapping activity also included. New larger maps this year!
Pre-visit Activity
Have your students look at our Snapshots in Time page at old historic photos from our collection before they come to the museum. Ask them to find different kinds of transportation in each photograph. Let them know that some of the photos they see on the site will be seen on their upcoming tour.

As an alternative to Mapping Green Bay you can ask for the Port of Green Bay Tour. While similar to the Mapping Tour, this tour includes the exhibit Port of Green Bay, plus primary products used and shipped in the area. Students can also spend time with the Great Lakes Maritime Transportation Education Trunk. For groups of three classrooms, the Museum will include the hands-on mapping activity.

Art Tours
When art exhibits are available

Length: 45 to 90 minutes
The Neville offers many temporary art exhibitions throughout the year where students can find form, function, and perspective.
Have students sketch or study a variety of different media. Check our website for details and dates of art exhibits. You may request an artist from the Green Bay area to lead your tour.
