What You'll See

Have you ever used a hammer or a wrench? You most likely have, but probably never considered them works of art. However, the Neville Public Museum’s latest exhibition, Tools in Motion: Works from the Hechinger Collection, turns those ordinary objects into extraordinary works of art. Opening April 18 and continuing through August 9, 2009, the artworks in this exhibition honor and celebrate the dignity of everyday tools, where form and function are inextricably linked.

Exhibit Details

The witty and light-hearted works use materials such as wood, paper, metal, and stone that either represent or incorporate everyday tools and hardware. Not only will contemporary art lovers enjoy this exhibit, but so will families with children and school groups.

The artworks represent only a portion of the Hechinger Collection, which includes a total of 375 works by 250 artists. The Collection was established in 1978 by John Hechinger, Jr. to enhance the Hechinger Company’s headquarters. His father, John Hechinger, Sr., founded the company, which was a pioneering do-it-yourself chain of stores located primarily on the East Coast.
