Representations of our fellow creatures in cave art, petroglyphs and other rock art help us view early life in the old and new worlds. The selections of what animals to depict and which media to use give us glimpses into their culture, beliefs and folklore. Prehistoric cultures in Europe, Mexico and the Midwest painted, carved, and shaped representations of a variety of animals in realistic, schematic and/or abstract styles. We can learn more about ourselves by seeing how other humans incorporated animals into their art work.
