Before Indian casinos sprouted up around the country, a few enterprising tribes got their start in gambling by opening bingo parlors. A group of women on the Oneida Indian Reservation just outside Green Bay, Wisconsin, introduced bingo in 1976 simply to pay a few bills. Bingo not only paid the light bill at the struggling civic center but was soon financing vital health and housing services for tribal elderly and poor. Clara Pagel was an inspiring woman who, at the age of 40, set off alone to see the world in 1936. Nearly sixty years later, author Janet Newman discovered letters Clara sent to her friends at the YWCA of Wausau, Wisconsin – letters describing Clara’s adventures in Shanghai, Manila, Italy, Egypt, and on a ship off the coast of Africa. Newman will read from Clara’s letters and describe her own adventure while piecing together Clara’s story. At the dawn of World War II, Wisconsin was home to nearly 200,000 dairy farms. Today, barely 6,000 remain. The ghosts of the missing can still be seen in withering old farms along lonely highways, some restored, many abandoned or decayed, but all with a story to tell.
