The 77th Art Annual exhibit was an all-media, juried exhibition of current artworks produced by artists living in the counties of Northeastern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  

This juried art exhibition began in 1942 during the height of World War II. For over three-quarters of a century, many of this region’s most celebrated and talented artists have exhibited their work as part of this Green Bay tradition. This exhibition exhibits the importance and power of visual languages that can be interpreted and reinterpreted.  For everything that needs to be said there is a language, and the languages of these artists are eclectic and relevant for the times in which we live.  The artists have spoken from their own unique voices utilizing various mediums, subject matter, and cultures.


The Juror for the

77th Art Annual

was Jan Mirenda Smith. Jan was the former Executive Director and Curator of Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass. Her combined tenure was 24 years at BMMG, taking it through 2 accreditations and several strategic planning processes, retiring in 2020. For 7.5 years between these positions, Smith was Director and Curator of Rahr West Art Museum. Academically, she holds her Masters and Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in Fine Arts with a certificate in Museum Studies from the Milwaukee Public Museum program and has a specialization in Visitor Studies.

Jan has served on the board of the Convention and Visitor Bureau of the Fox Valley and of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers Visitor Bureau as President. She was also President of the Wisconsin Federation of Museums and on the Glass Art Society Board of Directors for 6 years. She continues her museum practice as an AAM Peer Reviewer and is currently on the Board of the Art Alliance for Contemporary Glass. 

  
As an artist, Jan works in watercolor and pastel, focusing primarily on landscape, often working from photos she has taken, but sometimes directly outdoors.   She has exhibited in group exhibitions and had solo exhibitions. Her work is in several private and corporate collections. Currently, her work focuses on changing landscapes, influenced by climate change with plans for a group exhibition called Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Sky: Climate Transformed, opening at the Cedarburg Art Museum in January 2023, organized by Christine Buth-Furness.
